Plant Fine-root Decomposition in Relation to Biomass Quality in a Mixed-grass Prairie Under Cattle Grazing

چکیده

A modified litter-bag method was used to measure plant fineroot decomposition in relation to biomass quality in a mixedgrass prairie. Measurements were made during three years on moderately and heavily grazed pastures that had been under cattle grazing for 17 years prior to sampling. Although we found no significant difference in initial fine-root litter quality between grazing treatments, nitrogen limitation to fine-root decomposition occurred under moderate grazing but not under heavy grazing, suggesting the dominance of the carbon-limited decomposition in heavily grazed pastures as compared with the nitrogenlimited decomposition in the moderately grazed pastures. Our data and results have implications for not only shortterm nutrient release essential for plant growth, but also for long-term carbon sequestration potentials in rangelands under grazing management.

Grazing Effects on Carbon Dynamics in the Northern Mixed-Grass Prairie

The role of rangelands in the regulation of atmospheric CO2 concentrations is a critical issue in global climate change research. Rangelands are complex ecosystems that occupy about 50% of the land area in the world and USA. We studied the effects of seasonal grazing on CO2 flux on small plots located on a silty range site in the northern mixed-grass prairie with an Eapa fine loam soil. Treatme...

Vegetation Dynamics in Relation to Grazing Management Practices in Semi-arid Grazing Lands of Makueni County, Kenya

Livestock grazing practices in rangelands are being recognized as management tool for environmental protection and increased livestock productivity. Continuous grazing has been largely reported to reduce pasture productivity and increase environmental degradation. Rotational grazing is an alternative to continuous grazing and is considered to reduce negative environmental effects and provide qu...

Effect of Fertilizer Applications and Grazing Exclusion on Species Composition and Biomass in Wet Meadow Restoration in Eastern Washington

Effect of fertilizer applications and grazing exclusion on species composition and biomass in wet meadow restoration in eastern Washington. Fertilizer applications and grazing exclusion were used as restoration strategies in degraded wet meadows in eastern Washington to grow biomass in the root systems where it could not be grazed. We used a split-block design to test vegetation responses to si...

Grain supplementation on bluestem range for intensive-early stocked steers

A d-year study was conducted on Kansas Flint Hills bluestem range to monitor animal gain, grass, and forb standing biomass following grazing, plant population dynamics, and in 2 years, subsequent feedlot performance of steers under intensive-early stocking supplemented with increasing levels of sorghum grain. Each year from 1988 through 1991, crossbred beef steers were stocked at 0.24 ha/100 kg...
